As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education has never been a straightforward path. Without the guidance of family members who have navigated college before me, I have often had to learn how to balance academics, finances, and long-term planning on my own. Despite these challenges, I have remained committed to earning my bachelor of nursing degree and creating opportunities different than what were available to my parents.
The cost of higher education has always been a significant concern to me. I have paid for my education so far on my own, often requiring careful decision-making and sacrifice. I got married last year, and my wife and I are both enrolled in rigorous healthcare programs—she is pursuing her doctorate of audiology at the University of Utah while am I completing my bachelor of nursing degree at Weber State University. Together, we have chosen a path that demands not only academic dedication but also financial resilience.
Our programs require extensive time in clinical rotations, many of which are unpaid and involve travel to multiple sites. These commitments limit our ability to work and generate income, making it difficult to cover tuition, transportation, and basic living expenses. Living this limited income while managing two full-time academic schedules has been one of the greatest challenges we have faced. Still, we remain motivated by our shared goal of entering healthcare professions that allow us to serve others in meaningful ways.
My goal is to become a compassionate and skilled nurse who provides high-quality, patient-centered care. This scholarship would not only support my education but also help me continue climbing toward a future where I can give back to others and make a lasting impact in my community. As I will graduate in May 2027, receiving this scholarship would significantly ease our financial burden during a critical stage of my education. This would allow me to focus more fully on my clinical training and academic success, helping as I climb to the final rung of my higher educational journey.”
